As the Superintendent of Schools I encounter many situations that need my immediate attention, but none are more important than the health and safety of our students and staff. That is always my top priority.
The Lake County Health Department (LCHD) has confirmed two cases of mumps at Barrington High School with several probable cases waiting for confirmation. In addition, there are several suspected cases of mumps that have been reported at both Prairie and Station Middle Schools.
We have and will continue to be in constant contact with the Lake County Health Department regarding this issue. We are following the department's guidance in order to help reduce the spread of the virus in our community.
Our facilities are always cleaned each night. In an effort to contain the spread of illness, our maintenance crews have been directed to pay special attention to high-touch surfaces like tables and chairs.
The most important factor in reducing the spread of mumps is being aware of the symptoms. If you or your student experience any of the common signs and symptoms of the disease, please stay home from school and contact a physician as well as the school nurse.
In the meantime, we will continue to closely monitor the situation with the Lake County Health Department and provide updates as needed. Thank you for your continued support.
