Golden Apple Finalist

(2-24-2021) Barrington 220 is proud to announce that elementary teacher Anne McNamara has been named a 2021 finalist for the prestigious Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Mrs. McNamara is one of just 32 Pre-K-3rd grade teachers across the state of Illinois to be named a finalist for the award. That is just 4.5% of a record-setting 708 nominations received from 67 counties in Illinois.

“Being a Golden Apple finalist is extremely humbling,” Mrs. McNamara said. “I was thrilled when I learned I was nominated for the award. To me, the most important part is that a parent nominated me. I love my job and my students. I pride myself on connecting and communicating with families and am happy to know parents appreciate my effort.”

Mrs. McNamara is a special education teacher at Countryside Elementary, one of eight elementary schools in the Barrington 220 School District. She has worked at Countryside since 2002.

“Exceptional educators engage students in their learning at the highest level, develop and implement highly impactful, individualized instructional strategies so students exceed projected learning projections, and model empathy and care in their daily interactions,” said Countryside Principal Dr. Micah Korb. “Mrs. McNamara does this everyday!”

Mrs. McNamara received her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Multiple Disabilities and Assistive Technology. She is currently working on Board Certification in Special Education from the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET). During the 2016-17 school year, she received the Outstanding Special Education Teacher Award from NASET.

The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching honor outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Teacher finalists demonstrate -- in their teaching and results -- significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning.

Mrs. McNamara will be notified if she is one of 10 recipients of the award this spring. Each recipient receives a $5,000 cash award and becomes a Fellow of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who play an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs - which are dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois.
