Incoming BHS senior Gergana Petkova will be heading to Tokyo later this month to be an Olympic Reserve for the USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Team. Rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only event in which gymnasts perform on a floor with a rope, hoop, ball, clubs or ribbon accompanied by music, in individual or group events. As an Olympic Reserve, Gergana will be available to compete if one of the five gymnasts in the group event is unable to compete.
"I am looking forward to supporting the United States athletes as they compete with some of the best people from around the world," Gergana said.
Gergana has been doing rhythmic gymnastics since she was four-years-old. "The thing that I enjoy most about gymnastics is the ability to travel the world with my teammates whom I consider some of my closest friends," Gergana said. She typically trains six days a week for four hours a day. Her advice to young gymnasts is to "never give up even when times get hard because at the end of the day perseverance will lead to success. If you love what you do, do not stop doing it!"
