The Barrington 220 Board of Education's 2024 Referendum Advisory Committee will assist the Board in identifying the key components from a list of projects to be included in a referendum question proposed for the November 5, 2024 election ballot. The list of projects includes: 

  • New BHS Auditorium: A New, larger, and safer auditorium at Barrington High School with modern, accessible space and technology that will accommodate performing arts education, school events, and expanded community rentals. (Estimated cost: $35 million)
  • Music Rooms: New, larger spaces with improved auditory well-being for each ensemble, allowing for additional opportunities for small section and combination group ensembles, with added storage for instruments and uniforms. (Estimated cost: $10 million)
  • STEAM Labs: New, larger rooms for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Music (STEAM) courses at Barrington High School, providing optimized learning spaces for collaboration, hands-on instruction, and modern programming. (Estimated cost: $1 million)
  • Fine Arts Classrooms: Improved Fine Arts, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts spaces and classrooms at Barrington High School including an updated digital photo lab, drawing and painting classrooms that will improve instructional flexibility, and increased arts programming and opportunities for students. (Estimated cost: $5.9 million)
  • Safety & Security: Enhanced doors throughout the district utilizing keycard access to provide a more secure environment for students and teachers. (Estimated cost: $1.1 million)
  • Mechanical Systems: Safer, updated, and more energy-efficient high school buildings by replacing aging mechanical systems that are beyond their useful life. (Estimated cost: $1.2 million)
  • Plumbing: New piping and insulation to replace antiquated steel and black pipe at Barrington High School, leading to better-maintained schools and long-term operational savings. (Estimated Cost: $4.5 million)
  • Windows, Doors & Flooring: New exterior doors and window framing systems at Barbara B. Rose Elementary School and longer-lasting flooring at Lines Elementary School that will provide more comfort and improve safety for students while optimizing energy efficiency and leading to long-term operational savings. (Estimated cost: $1.6 million)
  • Fine Arts Programming Enhancements: Increased arts programming and opportunities for students, expanded gallery space, and a production shop. (Estimated cost: $12.7 million)
  • Middle School Science Classrooms: Modernized science lab classrooms at middle schools to effectively implement current and future curriculum. (Estimated cost: $3.5 million)


The 2024 Referendum Advisory Committee will make a final recommendation to the Board of Education by the June 4, 2024 Board of Education meeting. The final decision of what will be asked on a referendum question rests with the Board. If the Board decides to place a referendum question on the November 2024 ballot, it must approve the question by August 19, 2024.

The committee consists of approximately 60 members representing all district attendance areas and grade levels, as well as members of local Barrington community organizations. Committee meetings are open to the general public, however only committee members can participate and vote.
