Sexting Smartphone

"Sexting" concerns illustrated in recent situation at Station

Dear Parents:

Some Station families are now aware a small group of Barrington 220 adolescents were recently involved in “sexting” inappropriate images among themselves using their smartphones. The matter is under full investigation by the Barrington Police Department. The school, the students in question and their parents are all cooperating. Everyone believed to be involved in the situation at this time has been identified and contacted.

Because sexting among students can affect reputations and disrupt the educational environment, disciplinary measures are often severe. As criminal charges may also result, the school district cannot share further details at this time.

The real tragedy is some students were victimized in this incident. Protecting their privacy and their wellbeing are the school’s highest priorities. Those students most directly involved are receiving appropriate care and counseling despite the pending consequences.

This issue is not unique to the Barrington area. The risks of students sexting one another are well documented in news reports from communities across the country, but unfortunately the practice continues of sending sexually inappropriate images through smartphone texts, apps or social networks.

We will do everything we can to partner with parents in preparing students for a healthy entrance into adulthood without the life-altering regrets and damage sexting can imprint on a young person’s future. In addition to our efforts and lessons at school, please have this conversation at home with your son or daughter.

Thank you,

Dr. Craig Winkelman, Principal
Barrington Middle School-Station Campus
