Welcome
Welcome to Barbara B. Rose Elementary School. Our school is located in South Barrington and services students from kindergarten to 5th grade. We enjoy a diverse student body and exceptional parent involvement. The staff is committed to implementing best practice instruction and building a relationship-centered learning community. The school culture places high expectations on academics and social-emotional competencies. As our school motto states, "Every child has gifts and talents. We accept the challenge to find and nurture these qualities in each child".
What's New at Rose!
Winter's Here!
Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for our winter weather; coat, hat, mittens, snow pants and boots. They should be completely dressed when they arrive before school in the morning as the students do play outside for a few minutes after they exit the buses. Children who are not wearing snow pants and boots must remain on the blacktop only. Per Dist. 220 Board policy, students will have outdoor recess when the temperature and wind chill are above zero degrees Fahrenheit.
The health office has some spare clothing for children who get wet, however, the supply is limited. If your child does wear clothes home from the health office, please wash them and return them to the health office as soon as possible. You may want to have your child keep a spare set of clothes in a Ziploc bag in his/her locker in case of emergencies.
School closing information will be announced between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m. on the District website www.barrington220.org and by the Instant Alert System. Information will also be available on local radio and television stations. In the event it is necessary to begin the school day late, bus pick up and school start times will be exactly 1-1/2 hours after the normal times.
Rose Extends A Caring Hand (R.E.A.C.H.) to Barrington Families
The Rose Student Council and PTO have partnered to organize a clothing and toy drive for Barrington Giving Day (Saturday, December 12). Each December Barrington Giving Day invites families living in the Barrington School District 220 to a Giving Day. Here they receive boxes of food, warm coats, blankets, books and gifts. Over 750 families were served last year!
Rose Extends A Caring Hand (R.E.A.C.H.) to American Veterans and Soldiers
This Fall, as part of our R.E.A.C.H. intitiative, and in honor of Veterans Day, Rose School acknowledged American veterans and soldiers with two special activities. We collected candy and wrote letters to our brave soldiers overseas. We also held a Vetarans Day Assembly with two distinguished veterans.
Chess Club Recognized
Chess Without Borders is a non-profit organization that combines chess education and service learning. Founded in the Barrington elementary schools, a large number of Rose students have participated in Thursday morning classes over the years. Chess Without Borders was recently recognized as a finalist for the October 20 Chicago Innovation Awards. Congratulations Coach Schulman and students!
On Saturday, February 6, Rose School will be hosting a community chess tournament. More information to follow.
Community Book Read
On the evening of February 25, Dr. Ken Ginsburg, noted author, discusses his book, Building Resilience in Children and Teens. This event is sponsored by the District #220 Educational Foundation and PTO Presidents' Council. This book will also be the focus of my "January Second Cup of Coffee" meeting. |

New Mental Health Coalition
There is a new coalition, “H.E.R.E. in Barrington” (Help, Encouragement, Resources, Education), that will attempt to change the culture by spotlighting various mental health issues, programs, and resources in an ongoing series of educational events. I encourage you to attend Dr. Nausheen Din's presentation on understanding and preventing adolescent suicide on October 28, 7:00 PM at Barrington High School. On November 9, 9:30 AM and 7:00 PM at Barrington High School, Dr. Michael Riera will speak to parents and community members about ways to effectively communicate with teenagers.
More information on this broad coalition can be found at

Academic Excellence Award
Barbara B. Rose School was awarded a 2008 Academic Excellence Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. To earn an Academic Excellence Award, a school must have at least 90 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in both reading and mathematics for at least three consecutive years. Rose School last received this award in 2004. The students, staff and parents should be proud of this recognition. We share a mutual responsibility for the growth and development of our students. You can learn more about the Illinois Honor Roll by visiting www.ilhonorroll.niu.edu .
