Unfounded threat at BHS and violence on school campuses remind us to remain vigilant

Dear Community:
With respect to recent tragedies on
school campuses, such as those at Virginia Tech University and Columbine High School, it is unfortunate one student's inappropriate and alarming statements
prompted Barrington High School to address rumors of possible violence this morning. Thankfully, Principal Steve McWilliams and the staff, in cooperation with
Barrington Police, quickly intervened to ensure the threatened act did not occur.
The heightened security followed statements
made by a student during a conversation earlier this week in the presence of several classmates and a teacher. A rapid response by the teacher, school
administrators and local authorities resulted in the student’s arrest and removal from school, pending further investigation and disciplinary action. Even while the
full consequences of this matter are under consideration and the student’s suspension is in effect, our staff and Barrington police have taken precautionary
measures with an increased but discreet presence throughout the building and grounds. Hearing the rumors, some families have expressed both unease and support
during this cautious situation. Gratefully, attendance is normal, the atmosphere remains calm and instruction continues as usual throughout the high school.
As a community, we take pride in providing a
safe environment for our students at Barrington High School and every other school in Barrington 220. My intent in letting you know of this incident is not to
alarm you, but rather to reassure you of our vigilance in matters of school security and our commitment to open, honest communication. As always, I welcome your
questions, concern and feedback.
Sincerely, Tom Leonard
