BOOK CHECKOUT

  1. First through fifth graders may check out up to two books at a time.  More books may be checked out for classroom research projects and assignments as needed.  Kindergartners check out one book in the fall and two in the spring.  Lines Library Media Center is open the entire school day for children to exchange books with their teacher's permission.  Students do not have to wait for their checkout day to get new books.  They may check out books on any school day and are not confined to their book checkout day.
  2. Media Center books should always be brought back on the child's book checkout day (the day on which I provide time for book checkout during your son's/daughter's class with me.)  The child may then choose to return the books or to check out one or more of them for another week.
  3. If a student forgets one book, he may still check out one more.  If he forgets two books, however, he may not check out any until he has returned one or both of the overdue books.
  4. If a student forgets her books, she should return them on the next school day.  She should not wait to return them until the following week.
  5. When a student brings in an overdue book, he is immediately eligible to check out another book.  He does not have to wait until his next class with me.  There are no fines for overdue books.
  6. Lost or damaged books must be paid for promptly in order for the child to be able to check out the maximum number of items permitted.
  7. We encourage K-2 students to check out at least one storybook so that they are not bringing home two books that may not as easily lend themselves to parent/child sharing (such as military, shark, dog, or cat books).  We are not always successful in this, however.  If your student, despite his/her grade level, brings home books that you feel are inappropriate for his/her reading, interest or maturity level, please discuss more appropriate choices with him/her at home.  The LMC is a very busy and active environment with 600 students in grades K-5 visiting each week.  The entire school community shares the responsibility of helping kids make book choices that are appropriate for themselves and their families.  The library staff encourages age and interest-appropriate books, but refrains from directly telling kids what they can and cannot check out, as it is a violation of the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement and Library Bill of Rights.
