Kindergarten Reading Program :
The students have been working in small groups now with the teacher in preparation for reading groups in first grade. The students meet with the teacher at least once a week to pre-read a new book and work on reading strategies and vocabulary. The books are then sent home to read and enjoy with a family member. Thank you for your assistance in getting the books returned as soon as possible.
Math:
The boys and girls have been introduce to many new concepts this spring. They have been telling time to the hour and half hour. They have also been learning about coins and their values. Most students have mastered counting by 1s, 5s and 10s and we are now working on counting by 2s. We continue to work on graphing and tallying skills with our "Question of the Day" graph. Sending home the Estimation Jar is also a fun way to develop strong math skills that the students still enjoy.
Writing:
Time is taken to write each day in our classroom. Sometimes it is in our writing journals and other times it is writing at a literacy station that has been set up. Sometimes students are even writing during math and science lessons. The students continue to work hard to remember capitals and periods and proper spacing. We are focusing on helping students to expand their writing now and use more of the Tricky Words that they have learned this year.
Warm Weather is Here!
Now that the weather is warmer, some students are coming to school in flip flops and sandals. These are OK for the classroom, however they are not the best for safety on the playground. Please send extra gym shoes to school for outside play if your child wears sandals to school. Thank you!
The Science of Rocks!
This spring, the boys and girls have been very excited to use their knowledge of sorting to handle, observe and classify rocks during our rock unit. Each student has their own hand lens to use during our science lessons and they each have many different rocks to examine. We will soon be learning about river rocks, sand, silt and clay as well.
Farm Unit:
Our last few weeks of school will be spent learning all about life on the farm. The children love to hear stories, sing songs and recite poetry about the farm and farm animals.. The students will have the opportunity to write about the farm as well. We have farm stations where students will be engaged in literacy and math work as well as creative play. We are looking forward to our Farm Trip on the 10th of May and our Farm Breakfast on the 17th!
