BHS Student Volunteer Program

February

  • Countryside School Family Dance: Fri., Feb. 5th,  4-10pm; help with set-up, running games, taking photos, serving snacks/beverages, clean-up
  • South Barrington Park District Daddy Daughter Dance; Fri. Feb. 5th, 7-9pm at Barbara Rose School
  • St. Mark’s Day School Daddy Breakfast; Sat. Feb. 6th, 7:45-9:45am; help with breakfast and crafts for children
  • Barrington Cultural Commission Family Fun Fest; Sat. Feb. 6th at Langendorf Park, 1-4pm; help with decorating, concessions, or small group interactive theater activities
  • Lines School Mini-Course program; begins the week of Feb. 8th and is a 4 week program teaching students new skills for 1 hour a week after school (3:30-4:50). Volunteers can pick what day works for their schedule. Several assistant for classes (such as baking, yoga, waffle ball, hip hop), hall monitors and childcare are needed. See Mrs. Bauer or contact Marie Latimer, rie_latimer@yahoo.com or 847-304-4455.
  • Barbara Rose School Mini-Classes; sign up now to be an assistant in one of the after-school non-academic classes offered once a week for four weeks, Feb. 8th-March 8th, from 3:40-4:40 (Wed. 3:10-4:10); class themes include sports, cooking, magic, dance, and many more
  • Test Grading; help grade tests after school at BHS on Wed. Feb. 11th  and/or Feb. 24th from 2:15-3:15 (future dates include Wednesdays, March 10, 31, April 14, 28, May 12)
  • Cuba Township “Have A Heart” food drive; Sat. Feb. 13th, 9-12 or 11-1 at the Public Safety Building on Northwest Hwy. in Barrington; help receive and sort food
  • Sunny Hill Childcare for parent meeting; Thurs. Feb. 18th, 6:45-8:30pm; 3-4 volunteers needed
  • North Barrington School Fun Fair; Sat., Feb. 20th, 10:45-12:45 and/or 12:45-3:00; help with games and refreshments
  • MIST Indoor Triathlon; event volunteers needed on Sun., Feb. 21st, 7-11am at South Barrington Park District; free long-sleeved t-shirt for all volunteers
  • Barrington Special Olympics Track & Field Team; coaches needed to help a team for students with disabilities, ages 8 and up. Must be available for practices as well as events. Practices are held on weekday the evenings at District 220 schools, once or twice a week starting Feb. 22nd. Competitions are April 18th and April 25th. See Mrs. Bauer for a complete schedule.
  • District 220 Speech Tournament; Sat. Feb. 27th, BMS Station; judges needed (seniors only); runners needed to perform miscellaneous tasks such as delivering scores, bringing water to judges, etc.; judges and runners must be available 8:30am – 12 noon; light breakfast and lunch provided
  • IL Swimming Regional Championships meet at BHS; volunteers needed for timing, awards, concessions, etc.; no experience necessary, training provided; Fri. Feb. 26th, 5-8pm; Sat. Feb. 27th, 8-12 or 1-5; Sun. Feb. 28th, 8-12 or 1-5
  • Grove Ave. School tutors; volunteer once a week after school for an hour to be a one-on-one tutor for an elementary school child; must be available for the rest of the year (don’t sign up if you have a spring sport or drama production)
  • Lines School tutors needed; sophomores through seniors only, one bilingual tutor for a 2nd grade ELL student, after school once or twice a week; one tutor for a 5th grade girl once a week; one tutor for a 3rd grade girl once a week
  • Bilingual Spanish tutor needed for 7th grade student; jr. or sr. only, once a week, 3:30-4:30pm,  tutoring will take place at Sunny Hill School
  • North Barrington School tutor; once a week tutor needed for 4th grade boy, ELL student; Spanish proficiency helpful, but not required
  • Sophomores through seniors:  math tutors are needed once a week after school at Sunny Hill, Mondays from 4-5pm. If you are interested, please see Mrs. Bauer
  • Fantastic Ride middle school mentor program; for sophs.-seniors only; Barrington Youth and Family Service provides training for this once a week mentor program in which you’ll be paired with a middle school student for one-on-one and group activities; Mondays from 3-4pm, all semester/year long; optional field trips and one in-service per month from 4-5pm on Monday; school year only

March

  • Grove Ave. School Childcare for STEP parenting class; care for children while parents attend a class in the same building; 6:30-8:30 on any of the following dates: Wednesdays, March 10th, 17th, 31st, April 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, May 5th
  • Test Grading; help grade tests after school at BHS on Wed. March 10th and/or 31st from 2:15-3:15 (future dates include Wednesdays, April 14, 28, May 12)

Ongoing

  • Animal House Shelter; help socialize animals by playing with and walking them; you must be 16 yrs. old; open seven days a week, 11am-7pm, choose your own hours; located in Huntley, 20-30 min. drive; www.animalhouseshelter.com for driving directions; to volunteer, visit the shelter and fill out paperwork, set up start date
  • Alden Estates Nursing Center; help with daily tasks, e.g. wheeling clients to meals; help with regular organized activities, e.g. bingo or “snack & chat”, special events e.g. parties/celebrations; contact Jehd Tieanzo, Activities Director, 847-382-6664, eb_activity@aldengroup.org
  • Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce; office work and miscellaneous projects, after school on a regular basis; contact Janet Meyer, 381-2525
  • Barrington Area Library; shelving videos & books; contact Betty O’Grady, 382-1300

  • Citizens For Conservation; prairie restoration, every Sat. 9-11 meets @ HQ Rt.22, (call 382-7283) www.citizensforconservation.org
  • Cuba Township Food Pantry; help sort & organize donated food; contact Cheryl Tanaka or Kate Formichella, 381-1924
  • Good Shepherd Hospital Volunteen Program; must be 15 yrs. old; volunteer 2-3 hours once a week; must serve 80 hours before leaving the program (pick up an application from Mrs. Bauer or at the hospital)
  • Grove Avenue School one-on-one tutors; sophomores-seniors only, during the school year, once a week after school, must be available for the entire semester (see Mrs. Bauer, school year only)
  • Home of the Sparrow; a transitional shelter program that provides housing & comprehensive supportive services for women & children who are homeless. There are volunteer opportunities for childcare in our shelters in Crystal Lake & McHenry or volunteer work at our thrift stores in Palatine, Cary or McHenry. We also need volunteers to work on committees and fundraising projects/events; contact Sophia DeVries, 815-444-1660, ext. 26
  • Hospice of NE Illinois; office and miscellaneous projects, during the summer or after school on a regular basis; contact Janice Farrell, 381-5599
  • Lake Barrington Woods Senior Community; help with daily tasks, e.g. wheeling clients to meals; help with regular organized activities, e.g. bingo or crafts, special events e.g. parties/celebrations; contact Nadine Facher, activities director, 847-842-8900
  • Little City; activities assistant for children and/or adults with disabilities; contact Katherine Nelson, 847-221-7804
  • Peer Jury Program; administered through the Village of Barrington Police Dept.; training provided; time commitment about 3 hrs./month; pick up an application from Mrs. Bauer or from the Barrington Police Dept., 400 N. Northwest Hwy., 847-304-3300
  • Math Peer Tutors; during the school year, tutor during your free hours at school; contact Kelly Springer, Math Dept. Admin. Asst., kspringer@cusd220.org
  • Spring Creek Stewards environmental field work; prairie restoration; visit www.springcreekstewards.org for more information
  • Super Sibs; support program for young siblings of pediatric cancer patients, help with monthly mailings of support materials to children; check out their website at www.supersibs.org see Mrs. Bauer for more info or call Beth Gauthier, 847-705-7427
  • St. Alexius Medical Center Volunteen Program; must be 15 yrs. old; contact Rick Panunzio, 847-843-2000, extension 6412; during the school year, see Mrs. Bauer for information sheet

  • Walk On Farm Equine Assisted Therapy; therapeutic riding program for children with physical, cognitive, social & emotional disabilities; training provided; located in Barrington; contact Mary Illing at 847-381-4231
  • Wellness Place; (Wellness Place is a cancer support/education/resource center in a ‘homelike,’ non-clinical setting located in Palatine), after school receptionist, mailings, weekend outreach programs; contact  Annette Wegener, volunteer coordinator, 847-221-2400
  • Wellness Place “Belongings” store on Cook St.; needs volunteers with lots of muscle power to move large pieces of furniture; store benefits an organization which provides support services for cancer patients; contact Annette Wegener, 847-221-2400
  • Writing Lab Peer tutors; during the school year, tutor during your free hours at school; contact Mrs. Dionosotes in the English Dept.
  • Woodland School Pre-School/Kindergarten Library; assistant, during the school year once a week after school on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30-5:00; see Mrs. Bauer for more info
  • WINGS (Women In Need Growing Stronger) Program; child respite care, moms night out, thrift shop, landscaping;  contact Beth Lye, 847-577-4668, ext. 30
