Barrington 220 Kindergarten Information

The annual Barrington 220 Kindergarten Round-Up is Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. Parent sessions will take place at all Barrington 220 elementary schools. Parents will hear an overview of kindergarten programs and have the opportunity to pre-register their child(ren) for the 2017-18 school year.

Barrington 220 offers part-day kindergarten, an enrichment kindergarten program, Chinese Immersion and Spanish Dual Language. Below are forms and information that may be useful to incoming Kindergarten parents. For more information on any Barrington 220 Kindergarten program, contact Dr. Becky Gill at bgill@barrington220.org.

Standard half-day kindergarten

Barrington 220's standard kindergarten program is the half-day model. Half-day students will be fully educated according to Barrington 220's traditional curriculum and programming. This model will prepare children well for first grade and beyond.

Parents will have the option to state their preference for morning or afternoon kindergarten. Requests are granted upon space and availability. Morning sections run from 9-11:30 a.m. and afternoon sections take place from 1:10-3:40 p.m. Wednesday is an early release day in Barrington. Students are dismissed approximately 30 minutes early in the afternoon section.  *Times are subject to change

Optional kindergarten programs selection process

Kindergarten Enrichment

Students will be entered into a lottery system and chosen randomly for available kindergarten enrichment seats.

Timeline:
March: Applications are due in March.
April: Families notified of program acceptance

Chinese Immersion Program

Preferences

Within the Chinese Immersion lottery, preference is given based on the following:
  • Students who have siblings in the program are weighted 3 times.
  • If one twin (or other multiple) is selected, the other(s) is automatically accepted into the program.
  • Students in schools without a language program (Hough and Sunny Hill) are weighted 2 times since those schools will not be a part of the rotation.
  • Students with a Chinese language background (pre-school, home language, etc.) are weighted 2 times. This background must be substantiated with a proficiency assessment interview or proof of previous, significant study and approved by the program manager before weight will be given in the lottery.

Spanish Dual Language Program

Parents who desire to have their incoming kindergarten students enrolled in the Spanish Dual Language program must complete an application during the application period.

Student Selection:

  • Spanish dominant students will be selected for the program through a Spanish Dominant Lottery. (24 students)
  • Students with a Spanish language background are assessed by the program manager with a language proficiency tool.  If their skills are sufficient as proved by the assessment, they may be entered into the Spanish Dominant Lottery.
  • To determine which English dominant students are selected for the program, there will be two lotteries.
  • Students from the host school will be selected through a Host School Lottery. (12 students)
  • Host school students who are not selected will NOT be entered into the other lottery.  Instead, they will be placed on a Host School Waiting List based on the order in which their names were drawn in the Host School Lottery.
  • District-wide students (who are not from the host school) will be entered into a District-Wide Lottery.
  • District-wide students who are not selected will be placed on a District-Wide Waiting List based on the order in which their names were drawn in the District-Wide Lottery.
  • Students with siblings who entered the Spanish Dual Language program during or prior to the 2008-2009 school year (i.e. Grandfathered Students) are automatically accepted into the Spanish Dual Language program.  If grandfathered students are accepted into the program, the number of students selected through the Host School Lottery, District-Wide Lottery or Spanish Dominant Lottery will be reduced accordingly.
  • An effort will be made to maintain a balance in the program as described under “Demographic Makeup”.  In the event of vacancies in the program (up to Kindergarten for English dominant students and up to Grade 2 for Spanish dominant students), students from either the Spanish Dominant Waiting List, the Host School Waiting List or the District-Wide Waiting List will be invited in order based on their position on the applicable list.

Preferences:
Within each of the lotteries, preference is given based on the following:

  • Students who have siblings in the program are weighted 3 times.
  • If one twin (or other multiple) is selected, the other(s) is automatically accepted into the program.
  • English dominant students in schools without a language program (Hough, Sunny Hill) are weighted 2 times since those schools will not be a part of the rotation.

Program Entry:
Students may enter through the kindergarten cohort. Spanish speakers may enter beyond kindergarten if they possess the skills needed and space allows. A student who moves into the district and was previously enrolled in an equivalent program will be allowed to enter the program if there is space.
